Volunteer Retreat Weekend

 

The Volunteer Retreat Weekend event is a weekend of fun & fellowship, learning new skills and making new friends. Participants have the opportunity to enjoy fabulous seminars and workshops such as stained glass t-shirts, cardio dancing, leadership classes, and many many more while also getting the chance to network with volunteers from all over.  

Any registered volunteer with Girl Scouts is welcome to attend this annual event which is held at our beautiful 250 acre camp ground, Mah-Kah-Wee Program Center, located in Chuluota.

  • Multiple Sessions
    • Yes you can save a life, this class will teach you how and how to handle emergency situations. This workshop WILL qualifiy you as the First Aid/CPR trained person for your troop/group.
      Some of us need a little quiet time, some of us want to enjoy a special spot at Mah-Kah-Wee or maybe some social time with friends.  No need to sign up for a workshop, just check "Free Time"!
      The National Program Portfolio has two main parts – the National Leadership Journeys and the The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Complemented by the Girl Scout Cookie program, Girl Scout travel and Girl Scout awards, the National Program Portfolio is designed to help girls develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world!  This course will help volunteers get a better understanding of the National Program Portfolio as well as other program pieces that are available to them. Pre-requisites: Volunteer Essentials.
      The Volunteer Essentials class will help leadership volunteers understand the fundamentals of running their troop/group. From finances and planning to staying safe while traveling with girls.  All of your basic questions are answered! Pre-requisites: GS 101 and Troop Welcome.
  • Session 1: Saturday 8:45 AM - 10:15 AM
      Learn a cardio dancing routine that incorporates elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton and hip-hop, and features exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats.  Students will focus on a single step when designing a routine and add arm movements to work the upper body.
      Kumihimo is a Japanese form of braid-making. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. Kumi himo is Japanese for "gathered threads". Come and lets gather.
      Do you ever run out of clever, fun, and trendy crafts for your "Older" girls?  We have a few new tricks up our sleeves. You will get new tools and resources on craft ideas and projects that older girls love to do by doing them yourselves.
      Save money on your grocery bill with coupons and smart phone apps.
      Who said fashion can not save your life. These bracelets are not only fashionable, they're made of super strong military spec paracord. The ultimate in survival gear!
      Crafts for discovering your young girls' crafting abilities and imagination.  Great ideas!
  • Session 2: Saturday 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
      Learn the basic archery shooting technique and archery range procedures. This class is taught by our very own Level 3 Coach and National Champion. (not for certification)
       Extra buttons lying around? Learn how to turn them into a unique tree painting. Easy craft for any age level girls.
      You hear the phrase, duct tape fixs everything.  Well they are correct, but did you know duct tape can make cool crafts as well?  Come and learn a new craft technique that you can take back to your troop.
      Come learn fun and interactive Girl Scout Songs!  Katie promises new songs in case you may have joined her last year!
      Can you trace, color and cut? Come learn how to shrink items down to SWAP size!
      Soap making isn't just good clean fun -- it's a wonderful gift for friends and family.
      Use a dark color t-shirt to design a picture. Special paint will  make the design pop out and look like stained glass once it is dry.
  • Session 3: Saturday 2:00 PM - 3;30 PM
      Learn how to make basic Native American Dream catchers and learn the meaning behind the Dream Catcher Legend.
      Is your troop considering an extended travel trip? Savannah? World Center?  New York?  Learn the ins and outs of helping girls plan for this type of trip.
      Who does not like a good fun treasure hunt and exploring the outdoors. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where you use a GPS to hide and seek containers with other participants in the activity.
      Letterboxing is a great way to challenge the mind and body. It combines map reading, puzzle solving, orienteering, treasure hunting and hiking in a way that is fun for your troop or the whole family! Letterboxes are hidden all over the world, in fact, you probably walk by them every day in central Florida and you don’t even know it. In this workshop you will learn the history of letterboxing, where to find clues, how to set up your log book as well as embark on your first Treasure Hunt.
      With the increase in youth bullying, suicide and drug use, Girl Scouts are actively fighting to create change. Through a program to educate and reduce the stigma of mental illness, Girl Scouts can earn the Mental Health Awareness Patch developed by us for playing a positive role in their communities.
      Don't know what to do with all those old CDs laying around? Come and find out fun things you can make while being GREEN!
      Get ready, set, sew!!  Come and experience a simple sewing class. You will be able to learn a skill to take back to your girls.
      SWAPS for beginners. What are SWAPS, why do we trade them? Participants will make a dozen simple SWAPS and will receive a CD full of SWAP information, SWAP ideas and patterns, as well as instructions for the SWAPS made during the class.
  • Session 4: Saturday 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM
      Melted crayon art is an easy and fun thing to do for those artistic adventurers out there. It's so simple, yet the end result can be simply beautiful.
      So you took the basic class, now its time to advance your knowdledge of making Native American Dream catchers.
      Girls not ready to camp?  Interested in getting them safely outdoors?  Not sure what you need to know and do.  Come join us as we explore the basics of taking your girls outside! Learn different techniques and ways to work with your girls/volunteers to promote a cohesive environment for all to thrive.
      This patch program is designed to help Girl Scouts of all cultures develop an understanding and appreciation of the culture of Hispanic/Latin Americans through Discover, Connect and Take  Action.
      Get ready, set, aim, FIRE!!!  Your friends will beg to be bombarded by this novelty gun, which shoots miniature marshmallows up to 30 feet.
      In this class you will be learning how to take a simple flower pot, broken pieces of tiles and some grout to create a beautiful pattern flower pot.  Great craft or thank you gift.
      Girl Scouts promote giving back to your communities.  This workshop will give you ideas and information about the various service project options in Central Florida.
      Tea is not just for people its for the birds too. Come out and create a beautiful bird feeder with a simple cup and saucer.
  • Session 5: Sunday 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM
      Learn the basics of crochet, how to read a pattern, and begin making a simple scarf.
      Girl Scoutings highest level awards  - what are they all about?  Come and learn about these 3 girl awards that any interested girl in your troop can earn!
      Find out about different Central Florida locations where your troop can take a field trip.
      Learn how to use your smart phone to earn money, gift cards and physical items.
       Learning a new language is fun and exciting.  You will learn basic sign language to share with your girls or just for you.
      This project is a girls best friend, hammer, nails, mason jar and tin, who does not enjoy a creative DIY project.
