Calling all creative Juniors and Cadettes! Do you have a passion for performing? Are you a singer or interested in theatrical arts? If so, join us for our Build-an-Opera Weekend at Mah-Kah-Wee!!

 

We are so excited to bring back this amazing program we created with our friends at Opera Orlando! Heres a run-down of some of the cool things youll get to do and skills youll learn:

  • Brainstorm with the team to come up with ideas for a unique performance
  • Put together costumes and get your makeup and hair stage ready!
  • Work with Opera Orlandos performance specialists to learn all sorts of performing skills. 
  • Write out a script and pick songs for a short performance.
  • Having stage fright? Thats okay! Learn about what goes on backstage and how to help with the technical side of a performance.
  • Explore set designs and even get the chance to create your own set pieces! 
  • See your vision come to life at the end of the weekend and perform in front of your family! 
  • Get a chance to see a real dress rehearsal for Opera Orlandos performance of Rusalke for free after the weekend.

The theme for this years Build-an-Opera Weekend is Fairytales! We will be exploring different types of stories as Opera Orlandos team helps you create your own plot, script, and song choices for your performance. We will help you get started with the foundation but its up to you to create your own unique performance. 

 

All girls will have the chance to earn two badges. Juniors will earn their Playing the Past and Musician badges. Cadettes will earn their Public Speaker and Screen Writer badges. Additional steps for other badges may also be completed over the weekend, as well. We will also have an exclusive Opera Orlando fun patch & completion certificate for everyone to take with them!

 

Event Details:

  • Date: March 1-3, 2024
  • Time: Check-in on March 1 at 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM
    Check-out on March 3 after performance around 3 PM
  • Program Level: All registered Girl Scouts Juniors & Cadettes
  • Location: Mah-Kah-Wee Program Center
  • Girl Program Fee: $65
  • Girl Fee Includes: Lodging, food, badges, program supplies, and program costs.
  • Registration Deadline: February 25th, 2024

Please note: This is a drop-off event for girls only and no adult tickets will be sold. There is a known issue with our registration system where it shows "Adult Spots Sold Out" when there were never adult spots to begin with. We apologize for the confusion. 

 

This program will be taking place at Mah-Kah-Wee Program Center. Spend the weekend at your favorite Girl Scout camp being creative and working directly with Opera Orlandos staff of professional performers. 

 

Heres a brief itinerary for what to expect, however, some things may change as we get further along with planning:

  • Friday:
    • 5:30 - 6:00 PM: Check-in Dinner will not be provided but we will have snacks and youre welcome to bring something along. 
    • 6:00 - 7:30 PM: Introductions, getting settled, then heading down to cabins to unpack. 
    • 7:30 - 8:30 PM: Campfire & smores! 
    • 8:30 - 9:30 PM: Heading back to unit and start getting ready for bed. 
  • Saturday: 
    • 7:00 - 7:45 AM: Wake up and get ready
    • 8:00 - 9:00 AM: Breakfast + introductions
    • 9:00 - 12:30 PM: Girls will work with Opera Orlando staff to start creating their performance
    • 12:30 - 1:15 PM: Lunch
    • 1:15 - 6:00 PM: Continue working on performance through various activities. As we get closer to the date, Opera Orlando will have a better breakdown of the schedule for their activities. 
    • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Dinner & games in the Lodge. 
    • 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Head back to unit, showers, getting ready for bed.
  • Friday:
    • 7:00 - 8:15 AM: Wake up, get ready, and pack up. 
    • 8:15 - 9:00 AM: Breakfast 
    • 9:00 - 12:00 PM: Girls will work with Opera Orlando staff to continue creating their performance.
    • 12:00 - 12:45 PM: Lunch
    • 12:45 - 2:30 PM: Girls start preparing for their performance.
    • 2:30 - 3:00 PM: Parents & family start arriving to the STEAM center to see performance. 
    • 3:45 PM: Once performance is over, parents can start checking out and leaving. 

Important Information:

  • All participants must be registered for the event this includes all girls and adult chaperones
  • Please adhere to the adult/girl ratio when attending events. This can be found in Volunteer Essentials or Safety Activity Checkpoints located on our website.
  • Everyone must wear close-toed shoes and should bring a refillable water bottle

COVID Health and Safety Guidelines:

  • For all indoor events and large gatherings, masks are optional per GSUSAs current COVID guidelines.
  • When participating in outdoor events and activities there are no restrictions.
  • Follow all basic health and safety guidelines recommended by the CDC for handwashing and sanitizing.
  • If you or anyone in your group is not feeling well, please refrain from attending the event/activity.
  • As a reminder, some community partner programs have site specific guidelines that must be followed to participate in their programs. Please review their websites for details.

Please Note: Each troop/family should weigh their participation based on their own as well as their family members health concerns. As with any social activity, participation in Girl Scouts could present the risk of contracting COVID-19. While Girl Scouts of Citrus takes every safety and preventative precaution, Girl Scouts of Citrus can in no way warrant or be held responsible that COVID-19 infection will not occur through participation in Girl Scout activities.

Please keep in mind that these guidelines can change at any time, and we will communicate any updates as they are released.

Cancellation and Refunds:

  • All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email and sent directly to CustomerCare@citrus-gs.org by the cancellation date specified.
  • There will be no refunds or transfers for no-shows.

Confirmation:

A confirmation with final details will be emailed to you on the day after registration closes date. This confirmation will include the location address and information regarding day of program as well as any updated Covid-19 Guidelines. Please look over this confirmation and familiarize yourself with the process on the day you receive it.
