Volunteer Retreat Weekend

 

The Volunteer Retreat Weekend event is a weekend of fun & fellowship, learning new skills and making new friends. Participants have the opportunity to enjoy fabulous seminars and workshops such as stained glass t-shirts, cardio dancing, leadership classes, and many many more while also getting the chance to network with volunteers from all over.  

Any registered volunteer with Girl Scouts is welcome to attend this annual event which is held at our beautiful 250 acre camp ground, Mah-Kah-Wee Program Center, located in Chuluota.

 Session Workshops

 
  • Session 1 - Saturday 8:45 AM - 10:15 AM
    • Participants will gain and overview of Alternative Medicine and its role in 21st century health care. You will be provided with an introduction to Acupuncture &Oriental Medicine, Homeopathy, Mindfulness meidtation , and Ayurvedic medicine. Demonstrations of various modalities included in Acupuncture and Oreintal Medicine will be provided.
      Love the old-fashioned braided and knot rugs? Ever wonder how they are made? Come learn this simple easy Amish method of making a knot rug.
      Learn the beginning steps of scarfs, blankets, gloves, etc. Knitting is not just for Grandma anymore!
      Girl Scoutings 3 top awards - what are they all about? Come learn about these 3 girl awards to any interested girls in your troop can earn them!

      Crafts for discovering your young girls' crafting abilities and imagination. Great ideas!
      Some of us just need a little quiet time, some of us just want to enjoy a special spot at Mah-Kah-Wee or maybe some social time with friends. No need to sign up for a workshop, just check "Free Time"!
      Learn different techniques and ways to work with your girls/volunteers to promote a cohesive environment for all to thrive.
      In this class you will be learning how to take a simple piece of wood along with broken pieces of tile, some grout and add some felt feet to create an amazing fun kitchen trivet. Great craft or thank you gift.
      There's something special about old books. Come learn some ideas to turn old books into crafts. Learn how to use paperback and hardcover books as well as their pages to make 3D shapes, book garden, flowers and envelopes. Many techniques easy enough for younger girls as well as more complicated designs to keep older girls and our volunteers entertained.
      The Volunteer Essentials class will help you understand the fundamentals of running your troop/group. From curriculum and badges to staying safe while traveling with girls, to managing finances and your web of support. All of your basic questions are answered!
      Introduction to Yoga. We will briefly discuss the evolution of yoga in the West and then engage in some yoga postures which can be modified as needed.
  • Session 2 - Saturday 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
      Participants will learn how to make two different types of accordion scrapbooks using scrapbook and card stock paper, ribbon, and scrap cardboard. These are perfect for storing photos memorabilia, journaling. Create one form a special event like parties, campouts, VOLUNTEER RETREAT WEEKEND. Using scrap cardboard helps reinforce the concepts of recycling and using resources wisely.
      Learn the basic archery shooting technique and archery range procedures. This class is taught by our very own Level 3 Coach and National Champion. (not for certification)
      Bullying is a hot topic for girls and women of all ages. Come join us as we learn to recognize the signs of bullying and techniques for handling this serious situation as an adult and as girls.
      Come and enjoy some relax=xing moments on our beautiful lake at Mah-Kah-Wee. Learn the basics of canoe safety. (This is not a canoe instructor class.)
      Learn a cardio dancing routine that incorporates elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton and hip-hop, and features exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Students will focus on a single step when designing a routine and add arm movements to work the upper body.
      Do you know what signs to look for about child abuse? Do you know when to call child protective services? If you’ve ever had these questions or others like them and would like to get the answers, this workshop will give you the answers.

      Girls not ready to camp? Interested in getting them safely outdoors? Not sure what you need to know and do. Come join us as we explore the basics of taking your girls outside!
      Learn to use a crème and tools to make beautiful etched glass. Great thank you gifts!
      Outdoor Cooking Sampler provides new ideas to cook fun menu items with your girls.
      Love the look of a rag quilt but never thought you could make one? Come learn this simple basic quilt technique by making a wall hanging you will enjoy.
      We will be assisting our Alumnae volunteers by wrapping up a service project they will begin in February. Just want to help with a project that will beautify or make Mah-Kah-Wee a better place for our girls? We can use your help!
      Treat yourself to a much deserved pampering SPA session. Learn how your girls can to the same for the ultimate sleepover. Hand & feet treatments to rejuvenate those tired feet, aroma therapy, etc.
      Use a dark color t-shirt to design a picture. Special paint will make the design pop out and look like stained glass once it is dry.
      Participants will leave with a toolbox of exercises and tips for time and stress management which can be implemented into their daily lives and share with girls in their troops.

  • Session 3 - Saturday 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
      Learn the basic archery shooting technique and archery range procedures. This class is taught by our very own Level 3 Coach and National Champion. (not for certification)
      Learn the basics of crochet, hot to read a pattern, and begin making a simple scarf.
      This class will describe various plants and shrubs that attract butterflies to feed and lay their eggs.
      Learn a simple embroidery technique on gingham check fabric. Participants will have a choice of trefoil, heart or Christmas tree project. Finished project is put into an embroidery hoop and trimmed with gathered lace.

      It's cold now but April in Florida means relaxing time at the pool. Come for an energizing swim, water games or just dangle your tired feet in the pool while socializing with your friends.

      Create your own little Girl Scout out of two clay pots. This fun craft is easy and can be used as a centerpiece or room decoration. Great for ANY Girl Scout occasion.
      Come learn fun and interactive Girl Scout Songs! Katie promises new songs although you may have joined her last year!
      The National Program Portfolio has two main parts – the National Leadership Journeys and the all new The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Complemented by the Girl Scout Cookie program, Girl Scout travel and Girl Scout awards, the National Program Portfolio is designed to help girls develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world! This course will help volunteers get a better understanding of the National Program Portfolio as well as other program pieces that are available to them.
      Learn how to make gift boxes and bags from glue and Paper. Add a little bling and make a special gift even more special. All you need to know is how to cut, trace and glue!
      Need beads in your project? Learn how to make them yourself. From faux gemstones to flowers. We will be using Polymer clay - it's play dough for grown-ups!
      We will be assisting our Alumnae volunteers by wrapping up a service project they will begin in February. Just want to help with a project that will beautify or make Mah-Kah-Wee a better place for our girls? We can use your help!
      Can you trace, color and cut? Come learn how to shrink items down to SWAP size!
      This class will look at the varied models of delivery available to ensure girls with special needs are included in your troops. Strategies, ideas and activities will be presented as well as a look at matching badge requirements to state standards for scouting the school day troops.
  • Session 4 - Saturday 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM
      We will learn about basic jewelry making tools and how to use them to create beautiful jewelry for you and your girls. We will go from stringing and crimping to the basics of working with wire.
      Is your troop considering an extended travel trip? Savannah? World Center? New York? Learn the ends and outs of helping girls plan for this type of trip.
      Learning Facilitators, Outdoor Facilitators - what's it all about? We would love your help in facilitating classes for other adult volunteers to be come trained volunteers for troops, groups, series and individually registered girls and/or certifying adults for the various levels of Outdoor Skills. Not sure if this is for you, just come ask questions. Staff and facilitators will be available for information and Q&A.
      Fabric squares will be folded into prairie points and arranged in a star pattern. Simple hand stitching makes this project work and is a great decoration for a pillow top or pot holder!

      Do you ever run out of clever, fun, and trendy crafts for your "Older" girls? We have a few new tricks up our sleeves. You will get new tools and resources on craft ideas and projects that older girls love to do by doing them ourselves.
      Open up the possibilities for working with your own camera and photos.

      Learning a new language is fun and exciting. You will learn Basic Sign Language to share with your girls or just for you.
  • Session 5 - Sunday 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM
      Extra buttons lying around? Learn how to turn them into a unique bracelet. Easy craft for young and older girls.

      This workshop will show you how to turn old t-shirts into new accessories and clothes. Think you took this class before? Judy offers new projects each year!! Come check out the new ideas.
      Learn about what SWAPS are and why we make, trade and collect them. Participants will be able to make a few simple SWAPS that can be traded or saved for samples, as well as learn how to use the internet to obtain new ideas for SWAPS.
